1.1 Basic Number Concept for Primary School Teachers – EDN20002CE

This course will inform and consolidate teachers’ content knowledge and methodology in developing a conception of numbers for teaching in the FP and Inter/Sen Phases (Grades 1 – 7). It will focus on the development of the decimal number system, and put into perspective the relevant number sets that are dealt with at primary school level. The course will also equip participants to teach operations involving whole numbers.

Rational Numbers for Primary School Teachers – EDN20019CE

The course intends to inform and consolidate teachers’ content knowledge and methodology in developing a conception of rational numbers in the FP and Inter/Sen Phases (Grades 1 – 7). It will focus on the development of rational numbers, and the representation of rational numbers as common fractions, percentages, decimal numbers, and ratio. The course will also equip participants to teach operations involving rational numbers.

Basic Concepts in Shape and Space for Primary School Teachers – EDN20003CE

The short course will inform and consolidate Foundation Phase and Inter/Sen Phase (Grades 1 to 7) teachers’ content knowledge and methodology in developing a conception of dimension, especially 2-D and 3-D. It will also demonstrate how teachers can use classification as a means to describe and differentiate between objects, and between shapes. It will also further explore and define the properties of triangles, and the properties of quadrilaterals.

Developing Measurement in 1-; 2-; and 3-Dimensions – Grade 1 to 7 – EDN2009CE

The one-day course aims to qualify the space within which learners need to operate mathematically, ranging from 1-dimensional to 3-dimensional. This course also moves on to quantify these contexts in terms of measurement using practical and investigative pedagogies.

From Arithmetic to Algebra for Primary School Teachers – EDN2012CE

This one-day course introduces participants to algebra from the perspective of generalized arithmetic. It will forge a more robust number concept and will clarify the fundamental principles of number, which underpins the structure of mathematics. This course targets all primary school teachers (Grades 1 to 7).

Data Handling for Primary Teachers – EDN2015CE

This one-day short course exposes participants to a wider perspective in teaching data handling at primary school level. It shows the full cycle of data handling in practical contexts, and also deals with aspects of sampling and bias. This course will benefit teachers in the FP and Inter/Sen Phases (Grades 1 – 7).

Algebra Content for CAPS Senior Phase Teachers – EDN20020CE

This one-day course will provide participating teachers with a better understanding of the Real Number System and will discuss effective ways of introducing the different number sets, their properties and operations across the Senior Phase (Grade 7-9) CAPS.

Lines, Angles and Constructions for the Senior Phase – EDN2011CE

This one-day course aims to develop the theoretical background and practical skills to support different ways for teaching about lines, angles and constructions in Grades 7 to 9 as set out in the CAPS document.  Conceptual development will include investigations with paper folding, classical constructions techniques and manipulation using acetate sheets. In addition, you will be introduced to van Hiele levels of conceptual development in geometry, which is useful for understanding the cognitive levels indicated in the CAPS document. 

Designing Geometry Classroom Activities – EDN2010CE

Target Audience: Senior Phase Teachers NQF Level: 6 Credits: 2 Duration: 6hrs SACE PD Points: 7
This one-day course aims to demonstrate and development geometry classroom activities by integrating (1) pedagogy focused on concept development, (2) use of interactive computer programs and (3) teaching-learning media with the geometry content to be covered, i.e. Euclidean geometry aligned with the CAPS document. All participants will be experienced teachers, and will have some experience of teaching Mathematics at Intermediate, Senior and/or FET Phase level.

This course will provide participating teachers with a better understanding of Number Patterns and will discuss effective ways of teaching the different representations of patterns at Senior Phase level. All participants will be experienced teachers, and will have some experience of teaching Mathematics and Intermediate, Senior Phase and or FET Level.

Representation of Functions (BL) – EDN2017CE

Target Audience: Senior Phase Teachers NQF Level: 6 Credits: 1 Duration: 6hrs SACE PD Points: Pending
Equations and graphs are an area of mathematics that learners do not generally perform well at.  This course makes conceptual links between the notion of function and it representations. By developing a pedagogy that exposes the links, learners will have a more meaningful perspective on these topics.

This mode of short course delivery comprises 10 hours’ notional time, with a blend of pre-seminar reading, a 3-hour seminar, and 2 classroom visits.   Components of the course include:

Articles that focus on one or more suitable pedagogies for the content

Lecturer’s commentary which will accompany the readings

Classroom visit 1 – this visit links to part 1 of the Assessment (lesson plans).  There will be a pre-, and post-lesson discussion.  


Teaching Strategies for Numbers, Operations and Relationships in the Senior Phase – EDN2017CE

Target Audience: Senior Phase Teachers NQF Level: 6 Credits: 3 Duration: 12hrs SACE PD Points: Pending

This course will inform and consolidate Senior Phase teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogy in developing and consolidating learners’ conception of whole numbers, natural numbers, integers, rational numbers and irrational numbers.  The course will encourage participants to critically reflect on the sole use of algorithms in problem-solving situations, and in so doing, will facilitate a shift from intuitive approaches/strategies to more formal ways of thinking about operations with numbers.  

Assessment Principles and Strategies for Senior Phase Mathematics and Sciences – EDN2009CE

Target Audience: Senior Phase Teachers NQF Level: 6 Credits: 2 Duration: 12hrs SACE PD Points: 10

The course will inform and consolidate Senior Phase teachers’ understanding of assessment, in the paradigm of the National Curriculum Statement.  Teacher will be introduced to the main approaches to assessment and testing used by the department of education. Methods of both informal and formal assessment will be covered.  Informal assessment will include how to use self-assessment and how to give feedback to learners.  Formal assessment will include knowing how to use tests, examinations, assignments, projects, investigations and homework activities to assess pupils’ performance.  The relation of formative and summative testing and its impact on learning will also form part of this course.  How to assess pupils in order to improve instructions, diagnose difficulty, determine remediation needs and identify errors in thinking using assessment criteria, assessment rubrics, and marking memoranda will also be covered.  The focus is on the assessment of learning and on assessment for learning.  

Developing the Concept of Function from Patterns for Senior Phase Teachers – EDN20004CE

The course will inform and consolidate Senior Phase teachers content knowledge and pedagogy in developing and consolidating learners’ conceptions of number patterns. The course will encourage participants to critically reflect on the intuitive development of the general description of different number patterns, and how this contributes to an understanding of the idea of function.
