Teaching Language in the Primary School EDN2003CE

Target Audience: Primary School Teachers

This course will inform and develop teachers’ knowledge of language learning and acquisition.  It will be an integral part of a significant paradigm shift from teaching isolated language topics to learning the principles of teaching reading, writing and comprehension. A balanced language approach will underpin the course. It will focus on the classroom practice. The course will also develop teachers’ knowledge of reading and writing across the curriculum. This is a broad look at how language is taught in the primary school.

Teaching English First Additional Language in the Primary School EDN20018CE

Target Audience: Primary School Teachers

The three day short course will provide participating teacher with a better understanding of teaching English First Additional Language and will link CAPS requirements with regard to EFAL to their classroom practice.  All participants will be experienced teachers, and will have some experience of teaching Language at Foundation and Intermediate Phase level. This extends the teaching of language – and deals with the specifics of teaching EFAL.

Facilitating Effective Writing in the Primary School EDN2035CE

Target Audience: Primary School Teachers
This course is intended to provide primary school teachers with a professional space where teachers can develop knowledge and skills of teaching writing in the primary school. It will apply to both the Foundation and Intermediate Phase teachers. The course will focus on the relationship between pedagogical beliefs (theory and policy) in CAPS and their classroom practice. We will also explore the link between reading and writing and experience how writing facilitates learning. A continuation of teaching language, but with a focus on writing.

TEACHING READING AND WRITING IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL

This four-day course will inform and develop teachers’ knowledge of language learning and acquisition. It will be an integral part of a significant paradigm shift from teaching isolated language topics to learning the principles of teaching reading, writing and comprehension. A Balanced Language Approach will underpin the course. The relationship between language and learning is introduced with an emphasis on parent-child interaction, teacher-student interaction and their effects on learning. It will focus on the relationship between pedagogical beliefs (theory and policy) in language education and classroom practice. Participants will be engaged in the application of these theories and practices in their classroom, and the course will include the following topics: Early Literacy Knowledge and Skills; Learning to read and write; Development of reading and writing skills and Comprehension.
