Enlighten Schools Project 2004-2005
This project involved four primary schools and three high schools in the Hermanus area. As partner to the Enlighten Education Trust, the SDU provided curriculum support in Mathematics and Literacy in Grades 4 to 12.
This project aimed to:
- Improve learner performance;
- Improve educators' content knowledge and teaching skills;
- Establish a sustainable support structure between project schools;
- Administer three rounds of testing in Grades 3 to 12 that could inform interventions as well as indicate shifts in learner performance.
Successes
- Strong relationships developed between teachers in the project schools.
- Positive shifts in learners' achievements were noted in the results of the second and third rounds of testing.
- World Book Day and World Literacy Day were celebrated at project schools.
- Community members, including the Mayor of Hermanus, were involved in story reading at schools.
- A communication project with two schools in Los Angeles was launched, helping learners to develop their writing skills.
- Several learners at Qhayiya Secondary participated in the UCT Mathematics Competition for the first time.
- The April 2005 Newsletter of Association for Mathematics Education in South Africa (Amesa) reported extensively on an exciting measurement workshop.
- Out of the Box, an environmental education project, was introduced in three of the primary schools.
